Study of mineral nutrition of common cocklebur (Xanthium italicum Mor.)

The common cocklebur (Xanthium italicum Mor.) is one of the most important 10 weeds which are expanding in Hungary. It has low susceptibility regarding the commonly used herbicides for sunflower, soyabean, corn and sugarbeet. This weed had been reported earlier only on alluvial soils. Now its distribution is going from alluvial soils to heavy clays. This is the first part of a study of the mineral nutrition of Xanthium italicum Mor. Here are discussed the concentrations of the ten most important mineral elements (N, P, K, Ca, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, Na) from the seedling stage until the end of life cycle in the root, stem, leaves and fruits. It was concluded that Xanthium italicum Mor. is a typical pherophil weed (1600-5200 ppm.)
