[Sweet corn/groundnut planting systems on peat]

The potential of sweet corn production and acreage on peat is encouraging. The sweet corn/groundnut combination in multicropping systems have been widely practised in developing countries. The case study on peat had indicated that car yield of sweet corn cv. Thai Supersweet in the relay cropping system was comparable to its monocrop (6 750 kg/ha) i.e., without competition from the relay planted groundnut cv. Matjam. The intercropped groundnut caused 36 percent reduction in sweet corn yield. On the other hand, the groundnut pod yields were reduced by 43 percent and 68 percent in the intercropping and relay cropping systems, respectively. Competition for nutrients, and low light had reduced groundnut yield in the intercropping system, while the low availability of residual nutrients during relay planting was the main factor for lower yield in the latter system. Net and family labour returns were influenced by the prices of ear and pod yield. If the farm had been fully operated by family labour, the relay cropping would then be more profitable than the sweet corn monocropping. This trend would also be observed in the intercropping when sweet corn price is low while the groundnut price is at higher level.
