Chilling (natural chilling) and photoperiod effect on budburst was studied on apical and lateral buds collected from several cultivars of chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.). Budburst increased with chilling period and higher opening indeces were displayed by the apical buds in comparison with the lateral ones; no differences between photoperiods were assessed
