Breeding of oats for resistance to rusts and powdery mildew in Central Europe

In Central Europe, in 1983-1987, the resistance genes Pc-58, Pc-59, Pc-39, Pc-50-2 and Pc-55 were the most effective against crown rust. In addition, the high effectiveness of crown rust resistance genes of the cv. Garland has been constant. In relation to oat stem rust, in 1983-1988, the resistance genes Pg-4, Pg-9, Pg-13, Pg-16, and especially, Pg-a complex had been the most effective in Central Europe. The Pg4+ Pg-9 combination is supposed to be constantly highly effective and, therefore, recommendable for stem rust resistance breeding programmes. The stem rust resistance of the cv. Szegedi is probably conditioned by the genes Pg-4 and Pg-8. In relation to powdery mildew, the resistance genes Eg-3 (cv. Mostyn) and Eg-4 (Avena barbata translocation Cc 6490) remain effective in Central Europe. Avena pilosa derivatives with resistance to powdery mildew and applicable in disease resistance breeding programmes were obtained. Primarily, the powdery mildew resistance in Avena accessions - A. atlantica, CAV 6771, A. atlantica, CAV 6773, A. atlantica, CAV 6794 and A. byzantina, CAV 2107 was found. To achieve a stable resistance of oats to powdery mildew it seems very desirable to combine genes for specific resistance with genes for quantitative resistance in adult stage. Recently, a number of advanced oat lines with resistance to rusts and powdery mildew was obtained in Czechoslovakia, Poland and Germany (Petkus). A yield advantage of crown rust resistant lines was demonstrated in Czechoslovakia in 1987 when the outbreak of the pathogen was recorded.
