The effect of the morphological and functional properties of primary cell cultures of the bovine oviduct was studied as exerted on the development of oocytes matured and fertilized in vitro; this was compared with the effect of conditioned medium. After a short period of cultivation in synthetic medium, 13 percent of the fertilized oocytes developed up to the morula stage and 7.2 per cent up to the blastocyst stage, but when 21 days old cell cultures of the oviduct of both stages were used the proportion of embryos was almost twice greater (22.3 per cent, 15.7 per cent). The morphological examination of the cell cultures provided evidence that the slowly growing epithelium cells are responsible for the stimulation of early embryonal development: their secretion activity was demonstrated by means of conditioned media. Three calves were born after transfer of these embryos to the synchronized recipients.
