Injections of chemical preparations to stimulate resin production in trees

Injections of the Reglone preparation (diquat as active substance) to trees of Scots pine in 70 to 80 years old stands increased three to six times the resin content in the stem part to the height of 6 m above ground. The resin production was found to be more intensive in trees at a site of higher fertility and in vigorously growing trees. The months of May to July are the best period to inject the trees. The highest amount of resin was recorded in trees injected two years ago. Later on its amount decreased. The chemical was applied at a 20 per cent concentration, by injections to two kerfs made on the opposite sides of stem and covering a third of stem circumference. Other preparations were also tested: Roundup (glyphosate as active substance), Basta glufosinate - ammonium as a. s.) and Garlon 4 (triclopyr as a. s.); the latter is the only promising preparation (applied at a 20 per cent concentration). Besides Scots pine, neither were any phytotoxic effects observed in black pine, white pine, larch, spruce and Douglas fir.
