Effect of sowing date on seed yield of amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus)
1991
Jamriska, P. (Vyskumny Ustav Rastlinnej Vyroby, Piestany (CSFR))
The effect of sowing date (27th April, 7th May, 17th May) and weather conditions on the seed yield of amaranth was studied in field conditions (9.2 degrees centigrade and precipation 625 mm per year; 15.73 degrees centigrade and 325 mm per vegetation period; altitude 170 m). The seeding rate was 400,000 grains per 1 hectare and row width 0.75 m. The effect of weather conditions appeared to be greatest after the first sowing date and smallest after the third date. While the highest yield was reached after the first sowing date; in the other two years the lowest yields were obtained. Germination and emergence conditions affected the yields significantly. Warmer weather helped to accelerate emergence and to increase number of plants. Stand height was not affected by sowing date significantly, but stand density was. Later sowing resulted in the increase of stand density.
