The effect of an acid salt-type additive on the fermentation of grass silages made in bunkers on commercial farms in Wales 1990

Recently introduced onto the UK silage additive market is an acid-salt combination called MaxGrass (BP Chemicals Limited). It contains (weight/volume) 68 % ammonium hexamethanoate, 11 % ammonium hexapropanoate and 2 % octanoid acid. It is claimed that when added to grass at high rates (6 lt), it restricts fermentation and preserves water soluble carbohydrate. The results show that MaxGrass treatment produced results similar to those when formic acid is applied at about 3 l/t i.e. well fermented silages with a water soluble carbohydrate content = 35 g/kg DM. Fermentation was restricted i.e. lactic acid less than 40 g/kg DM in less than 15 % of the samples.
