1990 small ruminant survey

This survey was conducted in Kasungu RDP and in Salima RDP in the Central Region of Malawi. In Kasungu RDP a total of 189 farmers keeping 1902 animals (1254 sheep and 648 goats) and in Salima RDP, 352 farmers keeping 2709 animals (20 sheep and 2689 goats) were surveyed. The survey thus involved a total of 541 households keeping 4611 small ruminants. In Kasungu RDP farmers keep sheep and goats mainly for sale or income, for home consumption, for casual labour/crop production, and for funerals. Over 78% of sheep and 88% of goats are owned by the farmers themselves and some 20% and 10% respectively, are kept on behalf of relatives not living on the farm.
