Field response of male eastern larch casebearer Coleophora dahurica Flkv. (Lep., Coleophoridae) to synthetic sex-attractant and attraction-inhibitors

The sexual attractant established for European larch casebearer Coleophora laricella Hbn., (Z)-5-decen-1-ol (Z5-10:OH), and also its reported inhibitors (Z)-5-decenyl acetate (Z5-10:Ac) and (Z)-5-dodecen-1-ol (Z5-12:OH), were field tested on Coleophora dahurica Flkv. in natural and planted larch stands in the northeast of China in 1988 and 1989. Pure Z5-10:OH proved highly attractive at all test sites. The two other chemicals did not attract C. dahurica males but rather reduced responses when released with the attractant from the same traps, a 10 per cent Z5-12:OH addition lowered captures by approx, 90 per cent and a 1 per cent Z5-10:Ac or 100 per cent Z5-12:OH, by almost 100 per cent. This pattern fully conforms with the C. laricella sex-attractant response. A study of diel arrivals of C. dahurica malesat traps baited with 100 mug Z5-10:OH revealed a nocturnal, bimodal response rhythm, with a main peak occurring at 3:00-4:00 h and a second one at 20:00-21:00 h, thus contrasting with the crepuscular light response of male C. laricella to the same attractant
