[Cassava production and marketing for human consumption: pilot project phase 2. Annual report (1 June 1989/30 June 1990)]
1990
The activities of the 2nd phase of a project carried out by CIAT, Univ. del Valle, and the Integrated Rural Development Fund (DRI) are summarized. Aims were to integrate the production, processing, and marketing components of CF under the real socioeconomic conditions of a cassava-growing region. A pilot plant was established on the Colombian Atlantic Coast in Chinu, with the participation of local farmers' associations. Equipment, including washers, chippers, and grinders, was designed, adapted, or improved. To complement the establishment of the CF processing plant, approx. 22 ha were planted to cassava in association with maize and maize/yam at 20 different sites. Produce was used as raw material for the processing plant. Market research was also carried out at the national, regional, and local levels; results indicated that the estimated national demand for CF as a substitute of other raw materials in the industrial and domestic food sectors is 40,000 t/yr. CF has potential uses in processed meat, bakery goods, pasta, porridges, soups, sweets, cones, and sauces. Two marketing channels were also identified. Campaigns to promote the use of CF by the food sector were also conducted. Complementary research was carried out on product development, improvement of processing equipment, development of grinders and standard sieves, storage of dried cassava, and moisture measurement systems. Data were also gathered on prices, costs, and income-returns of the project
