Ngerero, N.
Information is given on the operation and localization of the Centre d'Adaptation et de Production des Semences Ameliorees (CAPSA). Physiographic, climatic, and edaphic characteristics of Northern Kivu, Zaire, are indicated and the importance of beans as staple food in this region is highlighted. The steps followed at CAPSA for producing improved bean seed are mentioned: (1) var. introduction, (2) trials with introduced var. (selection, comparative and multilocalized trials), (3) multiplication of selected var., and (4) seed dissemination at the farm level. The main results of comparative (bush and climbing var.) and regional trials in the Great Lakes region (bush, semi-climbing, and climbing var.) conducted by CAPSA since 1985 are given. Aspects regarding seed multiplication and dissemination at CAPSA as well as bean seed production constraints are analyzed
