[First cassava cultivars resistant to root rots released in Brazil]
1991
Two root rot-resistant cassava cv., Mae Joana (IM-175) and Zolhudinha (IM-158), were released in Aug. 1990 by the Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuaria and the Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuaria do Tropico Umido. These cv., both from the state of Amazonas, will be planted in the Varzea region of northern Brazil. A technological package was also prepared that emphasizes crop rotation (with maize or rice), drainage, suitable selection and pre-planting chemical treatment of cuttings, planting on ridges, vertical placement of cuttings, and destruction of harvest residues. The adoption of these new clones and the application of appropriate cultural practices would allow root yields to be increased over 80 percent in this region
