Studies of degradation of chlortoluron in marsh-soils involving high containment of blackgrass

The reasons of insufficient efficacy in controlling Alopecurus myosuroides were investigated in field studies over a period of two years. After experimental exclusion of resistance of blackgrass against chlortoluron, the herbicide degradation in soil was examined. Additionally, greenhouse tests were used to find limit phytotoxic concentrations in different soils. Using these concentrations we could determine the time of inactivation after application in the field. The phytotoxicity of herbicide residues in soil-samples was checked in the field on labelled plants and in the greenhouse with a bioassay. A high activity of chlortoluron against A. myosuroides in selected representative coast-soil was observed. This activity in the field was present over the time of inactivation as determined before in the greenhouse bioassay. With the observation of high degradation rates we could explain the insufficient efficiencies. All plants, which germinated during the short inactivation time, were controlled.
