In 41 field experiments with winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) mostly sown in southernmost Sweden in 1977-1979, the influence of two row spacings (12 and 48 cm) - with and without tractor hoeing at the wide row spacing and with and without pre-emergence chemical weed control by Lasso and Teridox - on overwintering, weeds and seed yield were investigated. Winter survival was somewhat greater in stands sown at wide than at narrow row spacing. The number and weight of weeds were reduced considerably by herbicide treament and hoeing. Without hoeing they were lower at narrow than at wide row spacing. Spraying raised the seed yield by 6% both at narrow and at hoed wide row spacings, but by 15% at the unhoed wide row spacing. Narrow row spacing yielded 11% more than wide row spacing with tractor hoeing, irrespective of herbicide treatment. The difference was greatest in years with winter damage and in northern areas with more unfavourable overwintering conditions than in southern areas. Without spraying the yield at wide row spacing was 8% higher with than without hoeing but when weeds were controlled by herbicide treatment hoed and unhoed gave the same yield. Thus, no positive effects of loosening the soil by hoeing were recorded, there was only a weed controlling effect.
