In screening of monounsaturated acetates, alcohols and aldehydes on the antennae of male Oria musculosa, best responses were evoked by (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate. Other compounds with strong responses included (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate and (Z)-9-tetradecenal. In field tests (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate on its own regularly attracted males of O. musculosa into traps. No synergistic activity was observed by the addition of any of the other compounds with strong EAG activity, or of (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol and (Z)-11-hexadecenal, both compounds frequently found as sex attractant components in the subfamily Hadeninae. Baits containing (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate should serve as a useful basis for developing a practically usable sex attractant formulation for the pest
