Agroforestry is a combination of food and tree-crops, as well as livestock system of commodities. In terms of business it is a diversification of product-line. It is a very complex system because it calls for both information or knowledge of value-free positivistic knowledge and knowledge of values of technology, biophysical resources, capital, and human resources, and knowledge of institutions, including market and non-market institutions which are relevant for developing agroforestry. Agroforestry research should be directed to produce these kinds of knowledge. This paper proposes three kinds of research which are important for producing relevant knowledge for developing agroforestry, namely (i) a disciplinary research that is conducted to produce disciplinary knowledge such as new methods of measurements, parameter estimation or development of new theories; (ii) subject matter research that is a multidisciplinary research on a subject of interest to a set of decision makers facing a set of practical problems; and (iii) problem-solving research that is research designed to solve a specific problem for a specific decision maker which is typically multidisciplinary. In this paper the emphasis was given on the needs for better research on institutions, technology, biophysical (including capital) and human resources, which are important for agroforestry development.
