Performance of promising variety of white corn pool 5-G8 (10F)e

The area of white corn in Indonesia is estimated around 35 percent of the total corn area. White corn was largerly grown in Central Java, South Sulawesi and South East Sulawesi. Most in the corn varieties grown in these areas were low yielding local varieties. An experimental was done to evaluate the yield performances and other agronomic traits of pool 5-G8 (10f)e under different environmental conditions. Pool 5-G8 (10f)e is a promising variety of white corn devided from a mixture of 10 selected half-sib families extracted from population of the gene Pool 5. The tests were conducted from the 1985 dry season to the 1989 dry season in 30 locations. Each test was arranged in a randomized compact block design (RCBD) with 3 or 4 replications. The average yield of pool 5-G8 (10f)e was 4.0 t/ha, equal to that of the standard check Arjuna, or 10.3 percent higher than that of the other standard check of Bromo ( a white corn). Based on land types used for corn production, pool 5-G8 (10f)e was yielding 5.0 t/ha in the irrigated lowland, 4.0 t/ha in the rainfed lowland and 3.0 t/ha in the upland areas. Based on the regression analysis of the corn yields (as suggested by Eberhart and Russel) in 13 environments, Pool 5-G8 (10f)e was identified as stable with a coefficient regression equal to unity and its standard deviation was zero. This variety was classified as a nearly maturing variety, maturing within 86 days, relatively taller than Arjuna and has a better husk cover. Pool 5-G8 (10f)e has a good potential to grow in the white corn areas.
