Public Health problems associated with fish

The role of fish as a source of animal protein is well known. Less well known, however, is the fact that there are illnesses associated with fish. These illnesses can be considered as food borne and occupations. The former are due to illnesses resulting from consumption of fish and fish products while the latter are illnesses resulting from the fish's environment. Causes of food borne infection include bacteria, cestodes, trematodes and nematodes. In addition certain algae, when eaten by the fish, cause ill effects in humans yet the fish are unaffected. Occupational hazards, on the other hand, include schistosomiasis and malaria infections as well as traumatic consequences due to association with water where fish are captured. The lack of literature for Malawi in this review should not lead to complacency but should point to a need for investigations in this area
