Vegetable insect pest management: status, constraint, controversy and prospect [Philippines]
1991
Bernardo, E.N.
This lecture is an attempt to contribute to the hastening of management program development against vegetable insect pests by 1) analyzing the present status to identify the more pressing problems, 2) clarifying some areas of controversy and seeming confusion, 3) discerning the lessons that may be learned from relevant past experience, 4) speculating on some possible improvements in the approach to program development, and 5) catalyzing the holding of objective. The last should prove most useful in planning the crop protection-related research thrusts deserving priority attention. In this lecture, the role of host plant resistance (HPR) is accorded a greater focus whenever relevant research findings are available. This is because HPR is a safe, compatible, economical and practical foundation for most, if not all, insect pest management programs.
