Effect of flubenzimine ((R)Cropotex) on mycelial growth and spore germination of various phytopathogenic fungi

Flubenzimine affected mycelial growth of a number of fungal pathogens, including Fusaria, Septoria, Pythium and Phytophthora species, at low concentrations between 4 and 21 mig/ml (ED50). Similar results were obtained for dry weight increase and spore germination. MIC-values ranged from 50 to 250 mig/ml. Microscopic studies revealed drastically shortened germ tubes or intracellular destruction, when the toxin was applied to growing hyphae. No protoplast-like structures could be observed under the influence of flubenzimine. Together with the fact that Oomycetes are retarded in vitro as well as other fungi, the conclusion is drawn that the fungitoxic agent did not primarily act on chitinous cell wall formation like nikkomycin or polyoxin D. Attempts to isolate mutants, which were resistant to flubenzimine failed. Also the investigations on cross resistance indicated that the mechanism of a number of well-known fungicides did not have distinct similarities to the mode of action of the new compound
