Fisheries in the nineties - from development to management and improved marketing
1993
Nauen, C. (Commission of the European Communities, Brussels (Belgium). Senior Fisheries Cooperation Officer)
Fisheries in the nineties are suffering from massive overcapacity and thus overfish many of the major marine and inland water resources. If the fishery, a major primary sector, does not contribute positively to the economy in resource endowed developing countries, these countries cannot develop to the extent necessary. Management of fisheries for sustainable development and improved use of existing harvest are therefore flavour of the month - and of the years to come.
