The irrigation in the Sao Francisco river Valley (Brazil). Features and prospects

English. The Sao Francisco River Valley takes up an area of 64 millions of hectares; the majority of the area has a semi-arid climate. In 1988 the total irrigable surface was estimated at 166.820 hectares and it is in great expansion, thanks to huge public and private investments. The reclamation territory of Manicoba, 4.230 hectares of irrigable area, represents an interesting example of the results obtained up to now, of the problems we met, of the difficulties that we still have to pass. The irrigation system, formed by lined canals, presents several problems. The field irrigation efficiency is very low when we use the most common method: furrow irrigation. At less than 10 years from the beginning of the irrigation practice, there are two projects that are being perfectioned: the first is a project of "Rehabilitation" and modernization of the canal system; the second is a project of "Emancipation" of the users, called to attend themselves to management problems. In spite of the several mistakes made, the experience of the reclamation territories in the Sao Francisco Valley has excellently been useful to demonstrate the importance and the great possibilities of the irrigation practice. Irrigation clearly represents an irreversible choice and a determinative factor on the way to development

Italian. Il bacino idrografico del Sao Francisco occupa un'area di 64 milioni di ettari, per buona parte con clima semiarido. La superficie irrigabile complessiva e' valutata, all'anno 1988, in 166.820 ha ed e' in forte espansione, grazie a massicci investimenti pubblici e privati. Il comprensorio pubblico di Manicoba, con 4230 ha di superficie irrigabile, rappresenta un interessante esempio dei risultati sinora ottenuti, dei problemi incontrati, delle difficolta' da superare. La rete irrigua, formata da canali rivestiti, presenta diversi problemi; l'efficienza di adacquamento, col metodo piu' diffuso, infiltrazione laterali da solchi, e' molto bassa. A meno di 10 anni dall'inizio dell'esercizio irriguo, sono in corso di perfezionamento un progetto di "Riabilitazione" e modernizzazione della rete, ed un progetto di "Emancipazione" degli utenti, chiamati ad occuparsi dei problemi gestionali. Nonostante diversi errori commessi, l'esperienza dei comprensori pubblici nella Valle del Sao Francisco e' servita egregiamente per dimostrare l'importanza e l'enorme possibilita' dell'agricoltura irrigua; l'irrigazione rappresenta ormai chiaramente una scelta irreversibile ed un fattore determinante sul cammino dello sviluppo
