[Evaluation of three different pollen drying methods for the production of hybrid seed of tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum M.)]
1993
Pertuze C, Ricardo A.
Three pollen drying methods were studied to determine pollen viability and efficiency and to evaluate its longevity. For these purposes, a field trial was carried out using five crossings of 10 pure lines. The pollen drying treatments were as follows: (T1) sun drying of anthers, (T2) drying of anthers by electric bulb, and (T3) sun drying of complete flowers. For each of the treatments the following parameters were obtained: fruit set, seed number per fruit and weight of 100 seeds. Pollen viability was determined by means of the tetrazolium test at pollination and for 85 days of cold storage period. The pollen obtained by sun drying of anthers and the anthers drying by electric bulb presented the better results in the pollen viability percent and in the seed number per fruit. In the same way, for both anther drying treatments greatest pollen viability percentages were obtained during the cold storage period
