Chlorophyl (Chl) content per dry matter unit was decreased by simulated acid rain (SAR) (pH 1.6) in Picea abies, Larix decidua and Pinus mugo, but not in Pinus sylvestris. SAR inhibited also net assimilation rate (NAR) in spruce, no changes of NAR appeared in larch and Scotch pine and it was even increased in mountain pine. 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) prevented the inhibitory effect of SAR on Chl content per dry matter unit of needles and total aboveground parts and stabilized NAR. Chl a/b ratio in needles decreased by SAR, while 6-BAP was responsible for its increase even in coaction with SAR.
