Shrinking fresh water fisheries in East Germany

The production of fresh water fish in the Eastern part of Germany ("Neue Bundeslaender") decreased to a level of 43 % from 1989 to 1992. The aim of this report is to present recent results of economic investigations which show the adjustment process in the East German fresh water fishery sector demonstrated by the development in Brandenburg, as an example. The data mainly based on interviews, refer especially to the economic and technological changes in the production of food fish and juveniles for stocking as well as its marketing. With regard to the findings of the investigation it can be stated that the firms of the fresh water fish sector develop competitive structures mainly for supplying the local markets with fish and fish products.
