Marketing opportunities for plantation timber [Malaysia]
1992
Khong, Lye Fong (Malaysian Timber Industry Board, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia))
This paper discusses the process of product planning and development for plantation timbers. The many alternatives for the utilization of these timbers ranging from commodity input to high value furniture will require different sales and market development efforts. In the evaluation of potential markets for these timbers, the implications of the future demand for timber together with the anticipated difficulties encountered in the marketing of plantation timbers will be discussed briefly. Based on the original compensatory plantation project proposal, the timbers are meant for the domestic market which has been projected to be encountering insufficient timber supply from natural forests in the not too distant future. As such it is presumed that the plantation timbers are meant to fulfill the domestic demand. In this paper the marketing proposal is thus confined to the development of the timbers for the domestic market
