Effects of an increased atmospheric CO2 concentration on growth and allocation patterns of woody plants

At the laboratory of Plant Ecology of the Faculty of Agricultural and Applied Biological Sciences of the State University of Ghent, 3 typical Belgian temperate tree species, Pinus sylvestris L., Populus x euramericana "Beaupre" (Dode) Guiner and Quercus robur L., are subjected to the normal atmospheric CO2 concentration of 350 ppmv and to an elevated CO2 concentration of 700 ppmv. Therefore container trees are cultivated in a large CO2 enriched and non-enriched green-house. The study is carried out in order to evaluate long term differences in growth and allocation patterns. The experiments started at the end of '91 and will be continued during 3 consecutive years. In the mean time, the results of the first growing season are available and indicated the following overall evolution of the plants in the enriched versus the non-enriched environment for the 3 trees species: no significant differences with respect to plant height; an increase, varying between 30 and 65%, with respect to leaf surface; an increase of more or less 35% in steam diameter; an increase of total plant dry weight with about 150%; a decrease of the Specific Leaf Area with 25% indicating thicker leaves; a decrease of Leaf Area Ratio with more or less 40%; an increase of the Root/Shoot Ratio of 50 to 100% at the end of the growing season

Presso il laboratorio di Ecologia Vegetale della Facolta di Scienze Agrarie e Scienze Biologiche applicate dell'Universita statale di Ghent, tre specie di alberi tipici delle zone temperate del Belgio, Pinus sylvestris L., il Populus x euramericana "Beaupre" (Dode) Guiner e il Quercus robur L., allevati in contenitore, vengono sottosposte alla normale concentrazione atmosferica di CO2 (350 ppmv) e ad un'alta concentrazione di CO2 (700 ppmv) in grandi serre. Lo studio viene svolto con lo scopo di valutare le differenze a lungo termine in fatto di crescita e modelli di allocazione. Gli esperimenti sono iniziati alla fine del '91 e proseguiranno per tre anni consecutivi. Nel frattempo, sono gia disponibili i risultati della prima stagione di crescita, che indicano, per le tre specie arboree cresciute in ambiente arricchito rispetto a quelle di ambiente non arricchito, la seguente evoluzione: nessuna differenza significativa rispetto all'altezza delle piante; un aumento variabile tra il 30 ed il 65% della superficie fogliare; un aumento pari a piu o meno 35% del diametro del fusto; un aumento del peso secco totale della pianta pari a circa il 150%; una diminuzione della superficie fogliare specifica pari al 25%, che sta ad indicare foglie piu spesse
