Biotechnological conversion of renewable raw materials

Sugar plants are well suited as raw material sources for the biotechnological production of basic chemicals and agents, because of the good microbic usability of the sugar and the relative low costs (variable costs and costs for land) for providing substrates. For all year processing, a raw material combination of grain and sugar plants is favourable. The sugar content of sweet sorghum can be used as substrate for the production of lactic acid and starter cultures for ensiling. The conversion can take place not only in submerged but also in solid-state fermentations. Two factors of importance for the efficiency and environmental compatibility of such a conversion facility are the reprocessing of all by-products and avoiding highly polluted waste waters.

Zuckerhaltige Pflanzen sind als Rohstoffe fuer die biotechnologische Produktion von Grundchemikalien und Wirkstoffen gut geeignet auf Grund der leichten mikrobiellen Verwertbarkeit der Zucker und der relativ niedrigen Aufwendungen (variable Prozesskosten, Anbauflaeche) bei der Substratbereitstellung. Fuer den ganzjaehrigen Betrieb eines Konversionsprozesses ist in Deutschland der Einsatz von Rohstoffkombinationen aus Getreide und Zuckerpflanzen von Vorteil. Der Zuckeranteil der Zuckerhirse ist als Substrat fuer die Erzeugung von Milchsaeure und Starterkulturen fuer die Silierung einsetzbar. Die Konversion kann dabei sowohl in Formeiner Submersfermentation als auch einer Feststoffermentation erfolgen. Zwei fuer die Nutzleistung und die Umweltvertraeglichkeit einer solchen Konversionsanlage wichtige Faktoren sind die Weiterverwertung aller Nebenprodukte und die Vermeidung stark belasteter Abwaesser.
