Experiences on improvement of street trees in Vienna
1993
Albert, R. (Wien Univ. (Austria). Inst. fuer Pflanzenphysiologie)
The causes and risks of longterm application of deicing salts containing sodium chloride, and the changing view of scientists as well as practical experts and authorities with regard to their use during the last decades are shortly discussed. Some experiences of therapeutic research projects carried out in Vienna are mentioned which clearly demonstrate the positive effects of certain restaurational activities within urban alleys. Especially good results with respect to the improvement of tree vitality and soil properties could be obtained when additional watering systems were included in the restauration programs: within a few years, the salt content of soils reached some 10 to 20%, and the trees salt load reduced to about 50 to 70% of the initial stages. Finally, the restauration of the historical "Wiener Ringstrasse", including the installation of an underground sprinkling system is mentioned as example of a grand scale project of urban environmental protection
