The presentation of the subject is a comment on the situation of plant breeding research with special regard to the non-university section after reunification in Germany. The political, social and legal frame of conditions in plant breeding are explained and important future research areas are defined. Likewise the great importance of biotechnology for plant breeding is emphasized. The presentation is resulting in the fact that, in Germany plant breeding research has a remarkable potential and a central function in agricultural politics. The efficient use of this potential by improved coordination and adjustment will be, in view of continuing financial restrictions, one of the most important tasks of research management
