Ecophysiology of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L., Trifolium brachycalycinum Katzn. e Morley). 3: Effects of grazing on seed production - self-reseeding efficiency and seed fate in the soil [Tuscany]

A research on the effects of three different utilization modalities (continuous grazing by sheep, cutting each 7 or 21 days) on three swards of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum cv. "Woogenellup"), T. brachycalycinum cv. "Clare" and their mixture at 50%, has been carried out for two years in a locality of Tuscan Maremma (Italy). Seed production under grazing has been higher than with frequent cutting and much higher than with cutting each 21 days. Differences were more evident in "Woogenellup" than in "Clare". Positive effects of grazing seem to be related to better buring got with trampling, to lower vegetation height and to more compact canopy structure. In all situations the most important component of seed yield has been burr number for surface unit; harvest losses, compared to potential production, have been kept around 33%. A high percentage of seed has been ingested by animals, giving a useful feed in the worst period of forage shortage. The ingestion has not affected the re-establishment of the sward. In fact, in the grazed situations, there has been a trend to increase hard-seed stock and self-reseeding rate throughout the years

Una ricerca sugli effetti di tre diverse modalita' di utilizzazione (pascolamento continuo con ovini, sfalcio ogni 7 giorni, sfalcio ogni 21 giorni), sulla produzione di seme e sue componenti, l'efficienza dell'autorisemina e il destino dei semi nel suolo di tre cotiche di trifoglio sotterraneo (Trifolium subterraneum cv. "Woogenellup", T. brachycalycinum cv. "Clare" e loro miscuglio al 50%), e' stata condotta per due anni in una localita' della Maremma toscana. La produzione di seme e' risultata maggiore nelle tesi pascolate rispetto a quelle sottoposte a sfalcio frequente e ancor piu' rispetto a quelle sfalciate ogni 21 giorni, con differenze piu' marcate in "Woogenellup" che in "Clare". Gli effetti positivi del pascolamento sembrano dovuti al miglior interramento derivato dal calpestamento, all'altezza ridotta e alla struttura maggiormente compatta del manto vegetale. In tutte le situazioni la componente della resa in seme piu' importante e' risultata il numero di glomeruli per unita' di superficie; le perdite di raccolta, rispetto alla produzione potenziale, si sono aggirate sul 33%
