[Use of sedative and analgesic in equine treatment. Practical note]

This presentation is based on more than 30 years in equine practice, especially surgery, 10 years of intensive clinical experience with detomidine hydrochloride as a sedative and analgesic. This includes studies to objectively confirm drug effects and to determine an optimal dose for sedation and analgesia and clinical studies on equine colic and surgery on the reproductive tract. Since detomidine approval in the US, it has become the sedative and analgesic drug of choice, used for a wide variety of clinical procedures and treatments, including use in equine colic and, together with epidural anesthesia, for the repair of rectovaginal fistulas. Detomidine was found especially useful for procedures on head and neck, including suturing of skin lesions at the head, around the eyes, the forehead and the lip, for dental procedures including wolf teeth removal and repair of long teeth, and neck surgery for soft palate entrapment. Experiences with detomidine as a preanesthetic are mentioned. In all these procedures, doses of 20 to 40 mcg/kg body weight were used alone since it was found unnecessary to combine it with other sedative or analgesic products
