The effects of different media containing composted poplar bark and sewage sludge on the growth of four container-grown forest species (Carpinus betulus L., Fraxinus oxycarpa Bieb, Viburnum opulus L., Acer campestre L.) were studied. Five media were tested: two media as control based on white peat and brown peat mixed with pumice (80:20 v/v) and three media in which 50%, 75% and 100% of brown peat were replaced with compost. The 50% compost medium provided the best results in shoot and root growth. Higher compost levels can reduce transplanting survival and growth in delicate species

E' stata condotta una ricerca per studiare gli effetti di differenti substrati, contenenti compost da fanghi e cortecce di pioppo, sulla crescita di quattro specie forestali coltivate in contenitore (Carpinus betulus L., Fraxinus oxycarpa Bieb, Viburnum opulus L., Acer campestre L.). Sono stati confrontati cinque substrati: due testimoni a base di torba bionda e torba bruna mescolate con pomice (80:20 v/v) e tre substrati in cui il 50%, 75% e 100% della torba bruna erano sostituiti dal compost. I migliori risultati, in termini di accrescimento della parte aerea e dell'apparato radicale, sono stati forniti dal substrato con il 50% di compost. Livelli piu' alti di compost possono ridurre la sopravvivenza al trapianto e la crescita di specie delicate
