Gives results of a project designed to determine the extent to which current and previous nutrition impacts on growth and body composition of lambs, and some aspects of lamb carcass quality. Conclusions drawn are that growth rate and carcass composition of lambs beyond 35 Kg liveweight is determined largely by energy intake and prior nutritional history of the lamb. Supplementation with rumen escape protein has only a small effect on growth and carcass composition but can improve feed conversion efficiency of finishing lambs. Management methods can modify the proportion of lean in the carcass. In particular re-alimentation following a short period of weight stasis can increase the proportion of carcass lean.
