Response to superphosphate by rice in an annual rice-cropping system in southern New South Wales

In field experiments where rice had been grown annually for 9 years without P fertilizer, rice growth and grain yield increased significantly up to 20 kg P per ha, mainly through an increase in panicle number. Applications of 20 and 40 kg P per ha resulted in similar yields and also had significant residual values for rice in the second year. Superphosphate increased plant height and resulted in earlier flowering. The variety Pelde was more sensitive to low P during early vegetative growth than either M7 or Calrose. The 3 varieties showed similar responses in grain yield to superphosphate. Application of superphosphate greatly reduced the growth of sedge.
