Assessment of stored oilseed protectants

Reports on trials undertaken to determine residues of chemical protectants in oilseeds and derived products, to assess the effectiveness of protectants in silo conditions and their limitations and to assess the extent of protectant residues in oilseed delivered from farms to commercial storage. Protectants developed for cereal grains were found to be less suitable for stored oilseeds, particularly where the seed had high temperature or moisture content, or contained a high proportion of fines and fragments. As far as could be tested residues remained stable after initial seed processing, and possible retention in the products of further processing could not be assessed. Protectants for bulk stored oilseeds are unlikely to be sought, and strategies for protecting the seed must be based on hygiene treatments and aeration as well as control from cross infestations from cereal grain.
