The role of Australian breeding ewes in Saudi Arabia [crossbreeds; Nejdi; marketing]

The study examined the potential role of Australian crossbred ewes as prime lamb mothers in Saudi Arabian feedlots and defined broad guidelines for management procedures for Australian sheep under such conditions. Both Australian Border Leicester x Merino and Dorset x Merino crossbred ewes have the biological capacity to be excellent prime lamb mothers under Saudi feedlot and irrigated pasture conditions. Each project needs to be supported by a management programme including disease control, nutrition, mating and lamb control. Positive steps have to be taken to improve Australia's sheepmeat image in the eyes of Saudi nationals and policy makers. Promoting results from production trials and test marketings comparing locally produced Australian, Australian-Nejdi crosses and pure Nejdi lambs is one such step. The study included visits to many sheep breeding projects in Saudi Arabia and discussions with key government, industry and research people.
