Reaction of Eucalyptus species to Pestalotiopsis magniferae in Egypt [leaf spot; fungal disease]

Pestalotiopsis magniferae causes leaf spot of Eucalyptus camaldulensis in Egypt. In leaf inoculation tests in the laboratory, E. brockwayi and E. occidentalis were found to be resistant to the disease whereas E. camaldulensis was highly susceptible. Leaf extracts of E. brockwayi and E. occidentalis incorporated in PDA medium restricted the mycelial growth of P.magniferae. The nature of the resistance of leaves of these species to infection may be attributed to the presence of phenolic compounds in E. brockwayi and to phenolic compounds and-or saponine in E. occidentalis.
