Aspects of ram management identified are: subjective decisions about what line and stud to buy from; objective fleece testing of stud rams; placing of rams onto station with at least one winter to aclimatize; allocate a ram paddock that has good feed, shade and water; conservatively stock ram paddock; double shearing; inspect and cull infertile rams; supplementary feed prior to joining; use 4 percent mature healthy rams; use a draft based on grams of teste per ewe; gentle handling of ram flock (particularly prior to joining); yarding rams and ewes together at the start of the joining period; and allow joining period of 12 weeks.
