Degradation of the wool fibre by bacteria isolated from fleece rot. [Conference paper]

In order to ascertain whether the bacteria which proliferate in the fleece rot lesion are responsible for weakening or, less commonly, complete break of the wool fibre, isolates of bacteria from fleece rot were experimentally cultured on staples of wool. Reductions in tensile strength were obtained with a number of bacterial spp. including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Xanthomonas maltophilia which have been shown to have a causal role in coloured and non-coloured fleece rot, respectively.
