The outbreak of BSE or 'mad-cow' disease in British cattle in 1988 resulted in consumer rejection of beef and economic disaster for the British meat industry. Scrapie is a similar disease of sheep. Australia is fortunate to be free of these diseases, but we must remain vigilant.
