It has been argued that beef production should be reduced to prevent further land degradation. In response, the lessons to be learned from a century of cattle grazing in central and northern Australia are examined, and it is argued that sustainable land management sought by both the pastoral industry and conservationists is unattainable without more fundamental changes in the Australian economy.
