Land evaluation: the Victorian land capability assessment approach. [Symposium paper]
1990
Lindsay, A. | Rowe, K. (Monash Univ., Clayton (Australia). Dept. of Geography and Environmental Science)
The land capability assessment procedure developed by the Victorian Land Protection Division is described. This system is based on a holistic and interactive model which relates production and management (land use) to land features and impact on the land. Land features considered to date are usually those which are seen to be most permanent and difficult to alter, such as climate, land form and soil physical properties. An example of land capability assessment using land capability rating tables developed in Victoria is presented. Some difficulties and strengths of the system are discussed. Possible extensions of the approach to assess new land uses such as wildlife conservation are considered.
