Comparison of bird populations in remnants of Wandoo woodland and in adjacent farmland [Western Australia]

There were differences in the number of bird species found in each habitat, ranging from 25 in woodland habitats to 11 in open farmland. However, there were no differences in the number of rare species estimated to be absent. Species diversity was significantly greater in the woodland habitats than in open farmland, and the species present were also different. Within the woodland habitats, only small seasonal changes were found, but there were large differences in numbers of some groups found in these three habitats, notably, ground seed-eaters, nectar-feeders, leaf-gleaners, and insectivores that feed on the ground and in low shrubs. Two methods of estimating population densities on farmland (fixed area searching v. walked transects) gave dissimilar estimates for most of the major species present. The estimates were often lower when walked transects were used.
