The effects of internal and external factors on lamb growth in Charollais breed

The objective of the trial was to assess factors influencing growth of lambs of the meat breed Charollais at strip grazing. Growth ability of lambs from birth to the age of 130 days was also evaluated. Evaluation of the live weight and weight gains of lambs involved the effects of sire's genotype, dam's age, sex, litter size, month of birth and year, and regression of live weight at birth. The average live weight of lambs at birth was 3.437 kg, and 11.178 kg, 22.087 kg and 38.313 kg at the age of 30, 70 and 130 days, respectively. The age of lambing ewes significantly influenced the live weight and average daily weight gains of lambs at 30 days of age (P0.05). A highly significant effect of sex on the live weight at birth was also determined (P0.001). The differences in live weight and weight gains between the males and females at 30 and 70 days of age were not significant any more, but at 130 days of age they were significant again (P0.05). Litter size has a highly significant influence on weight gains and live weight at birth and at 30, 70 and 130 days of age (P0.001). Regression of live weight at birth was significant at 30, 70 and 130 days of age, but its effect was not proved in average daily weight gains to the age of 30, 70 and 130 days. The effect of sire's genotype, month of birth and year on live weight and average daily weight gains of lambs at birth and until 130 days of age were not demonstrated.
