Control of black leg, black scurf and other post-harvest diseases of potatoes

Storage rots of seed potatoes cause significant losses for growers in Victoria. Mercuric dips were used effectively for many years to control fungal and bacterial rots but have been withdrawn from use. The effectiveness of various hot water dip treatments of seed tubers infected with blackleg were tried, but results were equivocal. Several fungicide treatments were applied as dusts, dips or sprays, or sprayed onto the seed and into the furrow at planting, but no positive conclusions could be arrived at. Fungicide treatments did not improve total or marketable yields or change the size distribution of tubers. Further research into the control of seed diseases is needed.
