Feed utilization, energy expenditure and nitrogen metabolism in working female buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)
1991
Teleni, E. | Pieterson, R. | De'ath, G. (James Cook Univ., Townsville (Australia). Graduate School of Tropical Veterinary Science and Agriculture)
For 4 36-month-old female buffaloes fed rice straw ad lib. supplemented with cottonseed meal to give a dietary N content of 1.15 percent, work (3 h per day) did not affect the digestibility of the feed but tended to reduce ad lib. intake of its organic matter. Energy expenditures increased in the working animal by 2.3-2.7 times the resting values. N balance was reduced in the working animal owing to increased catabolism of amino acids.
