The cold hardiness of buds of grafted grapevine plants and seedlings from 1 year of age till the end of the juvenile stadium was determined in programmed freezing boxes. The cold hardiness of buds increases with their age. The mean difference in cold hardiness between buds from 1 and 12 years (adult) old grafted plants of three cultivars (Riesling Rhine, Mueller-Thurgau and Portugais blue) was 47.3 %. The mean difference between buds from 1 and 4 years old seedlings of these cultivars was 31 %. The difference between one-year and four-year old plants was 37.1, 18.5 and 36.5 %, in Riesling, Mueller-Thurgau and Portugais blue, respectively.
