Timber seasoning in a solar kiln
1992
Palmer, G. | Kleinschmidt, S.D. (Queensland Dept. of Primary Industries (Australia). Queensland Forest Service)
A solar kiln of 15 cu m capacity was originally constructed using glass as the cladding material, but was rebuilt using moderate-cost corrugated polycarbonate sheeting. The results of drying trials following kiln renovation are presented, together with the cost, operating principles and performance of the kiln. Construction notes and working drawings are available for purchase. The kiln is effective: seasoned moisture content can be attained in a relatively short time compared to air drying.
